But no matter what, there would be a lot of stuff that would need to be cut out. But that goes without saying when dealing with book adaptations into films.

Obviously the best thing to do is wait and see what the entire story ends up as, write a 'treatment', a very condensed version of the plot, list out pivotal parts in the story, and 'sow' that in together.

At first I think there would be plenty of those 'pivotal' scenes on the list, but little by little some would have to be cut out.

And then of course, once the DVD releases you could take the LotRs collectors edition route and add in deleted scenes!
