Subject: Adapting GFD
In reply to: Comicality 's message, ""GFD" Movie Stuff...." on Tue January 20, 2009 23:09:01

Disclaimer: I'm still playing catch up with "GFD" and still have most of "Nights Eternal" and "Born of Fire" to go.

But based on the story so far up to the point I've reached, adapting it into movie presents some challenges.

What's Justin's overriding goal in the movie? Bring on the Vampire Dawn? Protect Taryn? Stop "the Beast" and/or "Rage"? When "GFD" starts Justin's life is crap. He gets "turned" and basically gets everything he wants (love, family, a place to "belong"). The story is pushed along by threats that will take away that happiness.

But in the first 8 or so "books" of GFD, those "threats" are mostly implied rather than explicit. The Beast has repeatedly attack Justin in his dreams, but hasn't yet done anything obvious in the non-dream world to threaten Justin. Rage is just... out there, somewhere, doing stuff. Yes, those threats are probably getting more real in the parts I haven't read yet - but in the movie version of GFD those threats have to be out there right from the start. And the movie has to finish with a confrontation between Justin and the threat. The threat doesn't have to be defeated (if you want the threat to feature in sequels), but it has to be *there* (like the way Voldemort tends to show up in one form or another near the end of every Harry Potter tale).

Just my two cents.
