There is a really simple solution to the age thing.

Make the characters older in the film... ~16 or something.. This is still young and would still get across the same things, but 18+ year old actors can play 16 year olds believably.

Where as the difference in looks between 14 and 16 is huge IMO.

AND, these actors won't age too fast, I'm sure if a 20 year old looks 16, he will still look 16 (with make up) when he's 24, so you could do a trilogy... although I very much agree with IRONY, the book has many many parts that can be condensed into ONE shot.

Plus, condensing is GREAT for something like GFD, with all the action scenes... think of the trailer! lol
