A Polk County detention sergeant passed away Tuesday, Sept. 8 after breaking his back in a jail altercation.

Sgt. Ronnie O'Neal Brown, 48, was responding to an unruly prisoner's cell Sunday, Aug. 30 when inmate Terrence Barnett became increasingly violent and broke the sprinkler head in his cell, according to a sheriff's office press release.

Brown was rescued from the cell by fellow deputies after being shoved into the wall and onto the floor by the inmate. He was taken by ambulance to Lake Wales Hospital to be treated for his injuries, and released.

However, the injuries to his back became so severe that he could not move, and he underwent back surgery at Winter Haven Hospital Wednesday, Sept. 2. He remained there after the surgery and died in his hospital bed Monday, Sept. 8.

Brown was a 20-year-veteran of the Sheriff's Office with honors including a Meritorious Service Medal for providing CPR to an unresponsive inmate. He is survived by his wife Tina, a detention deputy in Bartow, and their teen-aged daughter.

The sheriff's office has launched a homicide investigation into his death.

"Sgt. Brown was a dedicated man who was respected by his supervisors and admired by his peers," said Sheriff Grady Judd. "Our prayers are with Ronnie's wife and family."
