FORMER CHARLOTTE COUNTY CORRECTIONS OFFICER INDICTED

FORT MYERS, FL�United States Attorney A. Brian Albritton announced today the return of an indictment charging William Wilson, (age 25, of North Port) with Deprivation of Civil Rights Under Color of Law. If convicted, Wilson faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison.

The indictment alleges that in May 2008, while employed as a corrections officer at the Charlotte County Correctional Institution, Wilson assaulted an inmate and gouged out the inmate's eye while the inmate was restrained. The victim subsequently lost the eye. An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed a violation of the federal criminal laws, and every defendant is presumed innocent until, and unless, proven guilty.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It is being prosecuted by Chief Assistant United States Attorney Douglas Molloy.
