Communicative Approach: a solution for desperate teachers

How to teach effectively a second language? This is a question which has been widely discussed. That [C] happens since many teachers have been almost hopelessly looking for a method through which students learn sucessfully. Nonetheless, many teachers and experts agree on one thing. [P] The communicative approach is a solid method which guarantees that students learn a second or foreign language focusing on its real use.

According to Oliveira e Paiva(2001) [P] students learn more effectively when they are taught through communicative activities. That is expained [Sp] through the fact that [P] when students are exposed to tasks related to real world, they get very engaged in that. For instance, the author claims that a learner gets better the conditional “would” in a situation in which he or she is invited to think talk [X] about hyphotetical situations in a context rather than complete non-contextualized or meaningless sentences. Thus, in a communicative approach the learner would not only learn grammar topics but also, [P] many other aspects (pronunciation,pragmatics,culture...) related to real use of the language (Widdowson,1991) being really prepared for communication.

In addition, Widdowson states in his book, Teaching English as Communication(1978), that language is only learnt and applied when it is treated like a communicative tool which priviledges the differences and problems towards communication such as :agreements, disagreements and so on...[P]Expanding what he has said, a student, who does not learn through the communicative approach, portray [Wvf] and reproduce [Wvf] the target language as a “puzzle” .That fact happens when he thinks that language is built up only through pieces, structures, phrases or chunks that complete the puzzle.Widdowson also manages that a communicative approach stirs up the use (real production for extra classroom communication) instead of usage (production for fulfilling intraclass objectives).

In a word, teaching a language through the communicative approach means productive learning for students who are in a generation which depends more than ever on effective commnication [Sp] to achieve their goals. Then, teaching through this method represents the preparation towards the real world which demands conscious speakers not “puzzle players”.

COMMENTS:

Hi, Gasperim

Your essay is very well written and the paragraphs of the development are well structured. I liked the topic you’ve chosen.
I could only find a few problems that are indicated in the text, most of them concerning punctuation and spelling.
I just have one suggestion to make. I think you should add one pragraph containing ideas that are opposite to the one that your are defending in your text. A refutation would make your text much more argumentative.

Best regards,

Joyce
