Language learning assessment and partnership

Since language learning became a relevant theme of study, the importance of assessment in classroom has been highlighted. Teachers and students have different roles concerning language learning. The teacher has to provide a comfortable environment and plan a lesson well and the student has to do his/her tasks and be willing to learn. However, it must be considered that teachers and students work in partnership, if the children learn how to assess themselves, they will be more aware of their own needs.
First of all, to start doing assessment in classroom it is necessary to know the meaning of the word assessment, what its purposes are and how to use it. Assessment is a way of providing feedback on learning and teaching and it can be done in order to check students’ progress or to check achievement. Assessment can be used by analyzing tests results or by making comments and samples on children’s works.
Secondly, the teacher’s role in assessment is achieved by reading pupils’ work carefully and analyzing them, taking into account their weakness and necessities. After that, the teacher should share the results with the students, eliciting correct answers, grading, inducting answers.
Moreover, there are the pupils’ roles in assessment, but it is important to stress that their assessment is not automatic, which means that, they need the teacher to extract it from them. For instance, the teacher can give students an activity and after that, she/he can show the different skills involved in language learning (speaking, listening, writing and reading) and ask pupils to identify which ones they have used. Then, the teacher can ask what the classroom organization was (individual work, group, pairs). She/he can also ask students what they have learned and finally, it is also interesting to ask them if they liked the activity.
Students should know how to assess themselves because teachers are not always around them, they need to know how to monitor themselves. Assuming that partnership is essential in language learning, children will be aware of the process of learning a language and teachers will have more useful feedbacks. These are going to improve the effectiveness of classes, adjusting teaching in a way which enhances pupils’ learning.
