Developing reading activities

In today’s world information has a great value. Therefore students have to have a well-developed ability to deal with written language. However students face problems while reading texts. The reading process can be very difficult sometimes, but there are some basic steps to follow while reading a text, in order it make it easier.
The first step of the reading processes is the development of pre-reading activities. Before one starts reading a text, one should get acquainted with its subject. So, take a look at the text’s title and subtitles. What do they tell you? What do you already know about the subject matter? Besides the title and subtitles, what other hints does the text give you? Look at pictures, charts, boldfaced text, introduction to paragraphs and many others, which can guide you to the subject of the text. With those clues the reader can either try to predict the information mentioned in the text or to forecast the author’s point of view on the subject. He can even anticipate the theme or principal ideas contemplated by it. All those pre-reading activities will motivate the reading and contribute to the following steps.
The next step is the development of activities during the reading. A text can be read individually, within small groups or bigger ones, but no matter how a text is approached; the reader is always seeking for its comprehension. The first time the reader comes close to a text he should only read it quickly to identify the main ideas of it (skim). According to BBC website “There are many strategies that can be used when skimming. Some people read the first and last paragraphs using headings, summarizes and other organizers as they move down the page or screen. You might read the title, subtitles, subheading, and illustrations. Consider reading the first sentence of each paragraph. This technique is useful when you're seeking specific information rather than reading for comprehension. Skimming works well to find dates, names, and places. It might be used to review graphs, tables, and charts.” Then the reader should do a second reading. This time he should search for key information (scanning). According to the same source “When scanning, look for the author's use of organizers such as numbers, letters, steps, or the words, first, second, or next. Look for words that are bold faced, italics, or in a different font size, style, or color. Sometimes the author will put key ideas in the margin.”
The final step is the development of post-reading activities, in which the reader will have to put together his impressions and understanding of the text. Nóbrega suggests the exchange of impressions from different readers and the production of a critical evaluation of it. The reader can also try to summarize the text, using his own words.
Reading a text, at first, might seem difficult. But, we can see that an orientated reading process will make reading much easier and will help understanding.
