Scarlet’s Walk’s Creation


On September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center twins fell down after a terrorism act. That was the fact that inspired to compose Scarlet’s Walk, the seventh album of this American singer, pianist, and composer. “There was a seed that was planted after eleventh [of September 2001], which was that people started seeing America as a soul, as a being,” points out Amos. Then, Amos created a kind of an epic that moves around a woman called Scarlet who is traveling throughout America. The steps in the album’s construction were the creation of the female character named Scarlet, the rising of Scarlet’s biography, and the lyrics’ composition. “The Cd’s about America – It’s a story that’s also a journey, that begins in L.A., and crosses the country, slowly heading east,” states Neil Gaiman, one of Amos’ best friends.
During on tour in 2001, the idea of Scarlet came up with. According to Amos, “The idea came when I was on tour last year touring after September 11.” Amos began to think about the crisis of identity in contemporary America, and there it comes Scarlet, a woman created to give life to Amos’s thoughts, that is, an alter ego of Amos. Scarlet has in her features from all types of American people, from the early indians to the modern woman, which causes her to be able to talk about a long series of subject matters, being politics the most present one.
After having given birth to Scarlet, it was necessary to create her storie, what Amos made along with Neil Gaiman. Tori created Scarlet’s storie based on “real people and real events,” states her, as weel as on the stories told by her mother of her Cherokee family’s history. In order to complement, Gaiman wrote some texts in which he talks about Scarlet, making her more real. Scarlet has a life, has a story now, a story that will be told all over the album.
The third step in the construction of Scarlet’s Walk was the songs’ compositions themselves, which occurred more or less at the same time that she was creating Scarlet’s biography. “I wrote a lot of Scarlet’s walk while I was on tour. That was, as you know, a very strange time touring in America. It was the end of September 2001 – two weeks after the twins fell down,” said Amos; also, Amos pointed that “the songs started forming themselves...It became a journey, a road trip.” The songs represent Scarlet’s views and thoughts about all the places she passed through, all the people she talked, all the scenes she saw.
As a result of these three steps, there is a “highly personal and deeply political” sonic novel through America. The final album is composed by eighteen songs, each one relating a piece of the whole story. “It’s about a woman travelling slowly West to East,” states Amos.
