Task Two - Peer editing to Daniela

Activities to teach grammar to young learners

Grammar is a very important and (I think you could use a transition signal that show contrast) difficult aspect of language to teach well. There are language teachers who consider grammar as a set of forms and rules. These ones teach it by explaining the forms and rules and then drilling students on them. This makes the students bored and disaffected; they can do exercises and tests well whereas they have a great difficult to use the language in context. In this way, it is necessary strategies to teach children (?? - you should develop better your ideia in this sentence). There are some activities that should be done to teaching grammar to young learners.

The first activity is to present the grammatical structure in a child’s context with humor. To do this, teachers should create characters, which help a lot when presenting points of grammar. For example, a character who collects things can be created to practice the plural of nouns (He has three black dogs, five colorful balls, two books, etc). A soft toy or a puppet also should be used as a character and they are useful to teaching prepositions. For instance, the children put the toys in different places and say where they are. The teaching of countable and uncountable nouns is also facilitated, because a character can show to the children that is too difficult to count sugar, for example. Then, they will remember that it is an uncountable noun.

Another one is the story telling, which is very profitable because we all know that children love stories. This is the best way to practice the past simple and this can be done in a very funny way. The students can act out the story, changing their voices to imitate different characters. This activity will enhance their understanding.

The last activity to teaching grammar to children is the total physical response. There is not a better way of teaching imperatives or prepositions to children than by playing a game called “Simon says” (you should explain this activity). “The value of total physical response lies in the fact that young children are not able to cope with abstract concepts but rely on their senses to learn new things. Physically doing something helps the child to understand the language” (Oxford University Press, 2007). When the children are tired or not motivated inside the classroom, a physical activity is a very amusing way to make them be aware again.

In conclusion, grammar should not be seen as a difficult and boring part of a language. Teaching and learning grammar can become pleasant processes when funny activities with characters, stories and games are used to teaching grammar to young learners.(R)

COMMENTS:

The introduction is well written.
The paragraphs of the development are well structured, but I think you should mention the references in your text.
The conclusion could be a little more elaborated, you should rewrite it in order to sum up the activities you exposed in your essay.
