Smoking ought to be banned


Once a normal day and in their New York office,(?) Mr. John Fat and his colleagues stopped for their coffee break. But while Fatīs colleagues were able to sit at their desks and drink their coffee, Fat had to go outside. He couldnīt stay inside, because he wanted to smoke. If the smokers of the Big Apple(?) want to enjoy a cigarette, the authorities have decided they must(V) go out into the street or up onto the rooftops. Some people in the office think, smokers shouldnīt have to go outside to smoke. Employers ought to provide places for them to smoke. Why should anyone decide where they can smoke? They say.

Throughout the United State(WW), the number of places where people are allow to smoke has gradually become smaller and smaller. First it was banned on trains, buses, and planes, then in public places such as theater and airports. Nowaday(Sp), people canīt smoke in their workplace. Non-smokers are definitely winning the battle. Why should we breathe their smoke? They say. If they are lucky, smokers can still find some bars and restaurants where they can light up a cigarette, but it may soon be banned there, too.

Anti-smokers groups even think that smoke ought to be banned in peopleīs houses. If smoke is not banned in their home, then they can not have children. Smokers think itīs ridiculous. Why anyone should decide whether we can smoke in our own houses. Under new planes they wonīt be able to smoke in any house where there are more then ten visitors in a week or where there are children.

In 1996, nicotine was classed as a drug, like cannabis, cocaine, or heroin. It may cause lung cancer. In the country that gave tabaco to the world, smoking might one day be iligal (WW). And then Mr. John will have to give up smoking.
