Teaching verb to be



The verb to be is the most simple structure of English language. It is very famous for Brazilians specially for those who study english at public schools. They usually start studying it on fifth grade of high school, and repeat studying it on sixth grade until the end of third grade. However, many students still have problems understanding the verb to be after school. This commom verb for Brazilians is not so dificult to learn as people think.

Teaching verb to be is very easy although it has a lot of uses. Teachers do not need to spend much time teaching it. You only need two classes of two hours each to state this verb. Basically, the best way to teach it is firstly intruducing the three forms of the verb in Simple Present Tense, Affirmative, Negative and Interrogative form on the first day. State contractions forms of Affirmative and Negative, and teach the imperative form of the verb and its progressive form. Still on first day teachers may aslo make reference about There to Be, singular and plural form. On second class you teach the Simple past tense and progressive form and the Simple future. Remmember to specify the difference between future with will and going to. After that, you are able to give some examples in present, past and future tense.


Finally, your students only will have to memorize the simple structure of the verb to be through the given examples. Because whenever they use in a conversation sentences with same structure they will remind verb to be. This is an easy way to follow for those teachers who want their students to understand verb to be. If they learn this verb very well they will realize that english is a very easy language to learn.
