Reading process

Reading is not a passive skill; it requires interaction and dialogue from the reader. Reading L2 texts is an opportunity to learn not only the text information but also vocabulary. To achieve this learning the reader needs to follow some steps. It is affirmed that the reading process has two most important stages. The first stage is composed of two steps top-down and Bottom-up. The second stage has two stages as well, the self-questioning and the dialogue with the text.

The first step is top-down, when the reader reads the text to get a general idea and understand what the meaning of the passage is. In this step, readers guess the meaning of not knows words. Of course readers can make errors, or according to Goodman, ‘miscues’, but this does not destroy the meaning of context. Anyway, reading does not depend only of the top-down. This lead us to the bottom-up step. In this, the person checks words he or she could not deduce by the context of the text. These two steps of the process are called interactive/compensatory, because it is necessary to the reader to interact with the text and to compensate one type of strategy by the other.

After these, the reader needs to convert the interaction with the text in internal discourse. Since reading is a non-reciprocal task it is necessary the reader to function as addresser and addressee. With this the reader engages in an inner dialogue involving question answer. It is the hypothesized, induces readers o focus their attention and check their understanding. Then the reader need to recall the content of the text and it is only possible if there were self-question stage. The recall of content is the last stage and is the one that shows the reader him or her real learning.

The interactive/compensatory stage is necessary to the meaning be acquired it involves both top-down and bottom-up process. After acquiring the meaning is necessary to dialogue with the text because only with this process that is possible to understand a text contend. Following these stages the reader can effectively learn the text information and some vocabulary. This process respects the evaluation of each strategy, going from a simple one to a more complicated strategy. So, the reader can develop his or her abilities together with the stages.
