One effective way to increase students’ vocabulary is through the use of a Word bank. It is a storage place, usually a notebook, that works as an important tool of vocabulary resource, where they keep written, the language items they have learned. So as to work properly, the words should be organized in the following manner.
Firstly, the notebook has to be separated in topics, such as, family, food, the human body, furniture, animals and contrastive and synonym adjectives. After having the words exposure many times, the young learners have to write them in their related topic.
Secondly, they have to categorise the words from general to specific hierarchies. As an example, there is a human body with 29 external parts like head, ear, neck, hair, shoulder and etc. Going to a specific part, the students can learn about the internal organs , such as, lung, trachea, heart, liver and etc.
Thirdly, the students need to organize the adjectives according to their relation to the words (nouns) presented. Besides knowing that thick is not used for a cat , but for a book, its is advisable that they find a contrastive adjective for thick which is thin. They have to find a synonym for each adjective they found, for instance, while describing an object as a small, they can add two synonyms for the the same word, after repeated exposure of them. As time goes on, they feel more confortable dealing with organization of the word bank and can create their own style.
In summary, through a word bank that is based on the categorization of words, it is possible to have an effective, extensive and creatively enhancement in vocabulary acquisition.
