Autonomy and language learning

In the process of language learning it is important for the learner develop his autonomy. When learners take responsability for their learning, they get more motivated, retain and practice what they learn in a successful way. Autonomy in language learning makes students develop learning strategies and become reflective and critical about their process of learning. Independent learners realize how important is to go beyond classroom and its materials to be able to use a language and see their teacher as someone who will support and guide them.

The autonomy is not something easy to get, it takes too much effort, disposition and ability to see and deal with new objectives and techniques. Firstly student need to focus on his needs what are the reasons to learn a second language, for what and how many time they have to study and practice. Now that the learner knows what is his purpose, he must plan a program of work. This is one of the hardest part, to plan and follow this program in order to be autonomus. It is clear that in the beginning some students will need assistence from teacher. He will guide and give students some tips or even supervise fo a short period of time till the student got his own way.

To make this autonomy process really works, student evaluate his work and his learniing periodicly. In this way he will see his goals during the process and keep what he did to get at determined point or even improve them if it is necessary.
One of the main points os this evaluation is to recognise the faults, lacks. Where the, student, needs to pay attention on where he needs to improve and concetrate more. This evaluating process is essential to supervise his learning in each activity planned by him. It will also level his independence.

All these processes have a long way till students get in it. As said before, independence is not easy to achieve and demands time. During these jorney teachers has an important role, helping their students to become independent. However teachers should be aware to not put in danger student autonomy. It is very easy for teachers to take controll of the situation and make decisions for students. So teachers have the role to asses students in their language needs and reainess to become independents by their profissional guidance, advices and support to help students in evaluating their progress and reanalysing theeir needs.

It is a great change to become independent, but the results come faster than students can imagine. Learneres become more aware that there is options and as they become more experienced users of these they will begin to explore his learning process. These kind of learner is more active in determining their own onjectives.
