Subject: THE 'AGE RULE' DEBATE

There have been two articles in recent BLT Newsletters concerning the effect of Rule 12e of BLT's Rules- 'A Trusteeshall not hold office after the end of the Society's year in which his or her 70th birthday occurs'.
The first was an article by John Eaton entitled 'Are Septuagenarian Trustees Past It? and the second contained further comment by John Norris, bothsetting out various reasons why it would seem appropriate to abolish the Rule.

In Jonathan Scott's letter to the Editor in the last Newsletter, he indicated that those members who wish to see the issue re-visited and discuss the varying points, are being contentious or at least, potetially diversive, by questioning the status and effect of the 'rule'.

Surely the debate would be better served, not by urging members to simply abandon the issue, but by encouraging a proper and balanced debate on this genuinely important topic. Specifically, an article giving a reasoned argument on "why the Age Rule should be retained" would provide the appropriate balance and give the membership the overall picture.

Personally, I cannot think of any convincing reason to retain the Age Rule,so would welcome any enlightenment.
