Fisherman's Body Pulled Ashore In Redondo Harbor

Apparent Victim Of Drowning

Mar 1, 2004 11:05 am US/Pacific
REDONDO BEACH, Calif. (CBS) Rescuers Monday morning recovered the body of a lobster fisherman, who apparently drowned about a mile offshore from Redondo Beach, authorities said.

The accident occurred some time between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., said Hermosa Beach police Detective Brian Smyth.

Sailors nearby reported a boat sinking near Redondo Beach before dawn.

Emergency boats and choppers scoured the stretch of sea where the boat was foundering, hoping for a rescue. But they instead found the fisherman's lifeless body on deck.

Authorities withheld the name of the dead man, who was in his 30s, pending notification of his relatives.

Authorities brought the body of the man to shore in Redondo Beach, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported.

The circumstances of the death were under investigation.

I had an email from a friend telling me that the fisherman's name is Mark Willey. He was a commercial lobster fisherman based out of Redondo Harbor.

I did not know Mark personaly, but I did met him at the local market a few times!!!

My condolences to his family.................
