PART #34

Cassie and Boudreau set the date for their wedding when they met with the pastor of the Church that afternoon. They decided on an October wedding for Boudreau pushed Cassie for that decision. She could see his heart was set on October, so she smiled and agreed with him. The event was scheduled for the second Saturday in October. Boudreau told her that was a particularly beautiful time of year, and he wanted their wedding to be as beautiful and special as she was. She looked at him, smiled, and said, “You make it pretty difficult to refuse when you say that.

When they got back to Boudreau’s home, Hocum met them at the door. Boudreau saw that he was restless, and pacing the floor. It was obvious he wanted to go outside, for he pushed his way past Boudreau to get outside. He didn’t run off the porch to the grass, but paced back and forth on the porch sniffing the floor of the porch.

Cassie had a quizzical expression on her face as she looked up at Boudreau. “Whatever is wrong with Hocum?” she asked. Boudreau said, “I have never seen him act like that before; so I am not sure myself.” Hocum began to whine, and dig at the floor of the porch. Boudreau said, “There must be some animal under the porch. I can’t imagine why he would act this concerned if that were not the case.” Back and forth he paced and whined. From time to time, he would paw at the porch floor.

Boudreau decided he would try to peer under the porch; and asked Cassie to go into the den, and get his flashlight that he had placed on the top of his file cabinet. As she went back into the house, he asked, “Would you also pick up my walking stick that is propped by the file cabinet? I may need that for a prodding stick.”

Soon Cassie returned with the flashlight and walking stick. She handed both items to Boudreau, and he went down the stairs to the ground. Bending over he flashed the light on the trellis that was against the end of the porch. Hocum was there beside him barking as if to encourage him to find what was under the porch. Hocum was so excited that Boudreau finally said, “Hocum, calm down a bit.”

Cassie said, “Boudreau, be careful. You don’t really know what is under there. It might be dangerous.” Boudreau moved the flashlight back and forth to see under the full length of the porch. Finally the light came to rest on an animal. Boudreau exclaimed, “I don’t believe this.” Cassie, now quite concerned, said, “Boudreau, what is it?” He looked up at her; and said, “Honey, it’s a fox.” “Are you sure?” asked Cassie. “Yes, I am positive it is a fox,” said Boudreau. “Do you think it is the fox you have chased so many times?” asked Cassie. “Possibly, that is the fox,” said Boudreau. “So what are you going to do about the fox?” she asked. He straightened up, leaned on his walking stick, and said, “I’m not going to do a thing. When that fox gets tired, or hungry, or too hot or thirsty, he will come out on his own. He doesn’t need my help.”

Boudreau came up the stairs, took Cassie by the arm, and went into the house. Hocum decided he would sit on the ground, and keep watch over the fox. That fox was set for the afternoon as far as Hocum was concerned. This time Hocum had the upper hand over the fox, and he was going to enjoy every minute. Just let that old fox try to get out of there.

When they got inside the house Cassie looked at Boudreau and asked, “You’re getting a pretty casual attitude toward that fox, aren’t you?” Boudreau said, “You know Cassie, I believe I have my priorities straight now. I know which fox is really important, and the one I have chosen is from Atlanta. Give me an Atlanta fox anyday.” Cassie rolled her eyes; and said, “Oh my, you are hopeless.” “Yeah, but you love me anyway, right?” Boudreau laughed.

To be continued...
