Rodriguez reportedly hit the boy so hard he raised welts on the child's backside. He said he did it as punishment after getting a note from the boy's teacher that he had been goofing around in school and getting poor grades. He was charged with felony child abuse, which prompted debate across South Florida over how parents should be able to discipline their children. Rodriguez attended counseling and parenting classes as his lawyers worked to have the charge dismissed. After two years of extensive litigation, the state has agreed to drop criminal charges against him. Rodriguez's ex-wife, who was in the courtroom, was outraged that the charge being dropped. "I can't believe it is being dropped," said Stephanie Verdon, the boy's mother. "They said corporal punishment is allowed in the state of Florida, but the way that he was beaten should not be allowed. It should be overturned, it's not right." Rodriguez attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, disagreed saying his client should not have been charged in the first place. "There's a huge debate over what's appropriate and what's not appropriate," said Eiglarsh. "But legally we said all along, he had not committed a criminal act and unfortunately it took two years of extensive litigation to get to the point that it became clear to prosecutors he had not committed any criminal act." When Rodriguez was charged, even the judge who presided over his bond court appearance questioned his arrest. "If he hit him with the buckle or a baseball bat or something like that or he had injuries," said Judge Fred Seraphin. "But a welt from a belt? It's supposed to leave a mark so you remember to get your work done." Finally cleared of the child abuse charge, Rodriguez said he's learned a valuable lesson. "I'm more lenient, you know, it's helped me be more lenient towards him," said Rodriguez who vowed never to punish his son with a belt again. Rodriguez, who is not a U.S. citizen, could have been sentenced to five years and prison and likely deported to his home country of Nicaragua if convicted. He stopped and said some mean things and got red, but stopped right there with his hand on his belt. Cory has about 6 weeks until semester finals followed by holiday break. We have HS report cards for the 1st quarter as part of parent conference next week so hope no surprises. Cory gave me cause back in HS days to use the paddle with him as did Casey through last summer but Casey has toed the line so far this school year & the paddle has stayed on its hook. I dont paddle for poor grades unless its intentional neglect or failure to do work that earned the poor grade. I was no honor student myself & that was all my parents ask of me was my best. Mike, were you one of those guys who dreaded report card day growing up? Get your ass spanked if you brought home low grades? In my school days, the paddle was still an option for the principal. Surprisingly, Casey is really up & going sophomore year. Maybe growing up some & screwing his head tighter. No curfew violations. Date Posted: 16:44:03 09/09/09 Wed I was sent a website to read this week by a friend of a military school, Chamberlain Hunt Academy in Mississippi, that has in the handbook a provision for corporal discipline for its cadets, grades 7-12, using an oak paddle straight to the boy's bare bottom. Now I grew up in a school district that paddled and requested a signed consent, which my parents signed, and yes, I got my seat paddled into my junior year of high school but it was licks to the seat of your jeans and you & the principal in his office behind a closed door. Their Academy handbook outlines a procedure where a cadet is summoned to the Commandant's office, called "The Porch" when misconduct warrants a paddling. In the presence of all assembled cadets, a cadet is called in & instructed to turn around facing his fellow cadets through a frosted glass panel and lean forward. In position, a staff assistant will lower the cadet's trousers and boxers exposing the buttock and after a prayer, the cadet is paddled bare bottom with an oak paddle audible to other cadets present. That must be extremely embarrassing to take a paddling bare bottomed visually and audible in presence of your peers and to walk back out to face them after the paddling. I'm curious as to other teens who might have received such a semi-public paddling in school, jeans &/or shorts lowered and your reaction to the experience or your reaction to this military school's discipline policy for boys age 12-17. If there are men who attended this military school or know someone who did and received such a paddling, your willingness to share your experience would be informative. Date Posted: 16:53:33 08/31/09 Mon Mike, All 3 are now back in school. Cory's sophomore year started last week & he's living on campus in the dorm. Our 2 high schoolers started this morning with short schedules this week & full days after Labor Day. Cindy was ready for senior year but Casey being the typical boy I guess dreading a return to classes with homework as a 10th grader. The curfew issue arose again over this weekend. We set 9:00 for Casey; 10:00 for Cindy & obviously he felt that unfair. I see nothing out on the street that a 15 y/o boy needs to be at after 9:00 & told him we'd be flexible on weekends & negotiate on special or school events nights. Cindy will be doing some parttime work after school & as a senior, we're giving her some leeway & hope she doesn't breech that trust. At one point in the curfew discussion Casey was feeling his "oats" so to say & said "what if I don't get home by 9?". I had a simple answer & he gave me a startled look: "son, you're not too old for dad to take you over my leg and paddle that ass of yours, so be home by 9". Well, we wouldn't go away without a backup plan in place using these neighbors who are good friends in case something happen. Apparently Casey let it slip in conversation while at their home that Cory had referred to the paddle in the closet hanging when Casey had missed curfew getting home. Something about Cory getting his ass busted around the same age for breaking curfew and if he had to, he'd paddle Casey's ass if it happened again. It was big brother intimidation sounds like. Did my share of time-outs and listened to many a lecture on what I had done wrong. Had younger sisters but one of my best buddies was my cousin, Mark, since we were the same age & had similar interests. One big difference however was Mark's willingness to push rules & take risks greater than me except when we were together and his dad, Uncle Steve, had no reservations about spanking his ass when Mark needed it. The summer before we started high school, I spent a couple weeks of vacation at Mark's. In the mid-80s it was thought to be real cool to smoke & one afternoon Mark produced a pack of cigarettes and offered the dare that we both smoke. Left leg elevated on rim of tub, my uncle laid me across that leg & to my surprise, felt the waistband of my shorts and underpants pulled down.
