For me, each of the male characters symbolizes an aspect of life in Northern Ireland at the time: Casey is (in very simplistic terms) the working-class, street-smart fighter who is willing to take the fight to the occupier, Pat is the young, educated, idealistic "new" rebel, wanting to bring about change through social action; Jamie is the wealthy, upper-class, foreign-educated, behind the scenes mover for change, but much slower than the other two types would accept. Pamela is the bright, fresh ideas and energy coming from America, the new hope through the scattered Irish peoples' long-held notions of Ireland and what it was, is, can and should be. Each of them has a role to play in shaping the political and social happenings of Northern Ireland in the 1960s. And then there's Lucien Broughton, as the embodiment of ignorance, hatred, blind adherence to the past and to an ideal (British superiority and rule) that is no longer even held in the motherland. On a personal level, Pamela is the embodiment of all that Casey and Jamie want in a woman and in life -- beauty, grace, passion, intelligence, love, warmth, hope, comfort and a future.
