Subject: Exit Unicorns Chapter 18

Question for Cindy:
Do you find characters developing in unexpected ways, or do you have a plan? Has there ever been a surprise character, someone you didn’t see coming?

Cindy's Answer: Other than the main lines of the history, no I don't have a plan. Afterall, as I've said before Casey was meant to be a minor character- HA- Mr. Riordan took the story and ran with it and all I could do was follow. And yes, characters develop in surprising ways all the time. Pat Riordan for instance, is in some ways the crux of the overall arc of the story and by that I mean all four or five books, whatever it ends up being. I never expected that, but he kind of represents the history and what history can do to a man more than any of the others. I also have a character named Lawrence in 'Mermaid' that popped up out of nowhere and changed things for Casey and Pamela in particular. The villain in 'Mermaid' also seemed fairly straightforward, until his backstory came to me one day and I went 'ah that's who you are' and then the story went in a totally different direction.

Chapter 18 - Peace Be Unto You

What is Exit Unicorn's central conflict? Is it between characters, a character and society, a character and nature? Is it internal—an emotional struggle within the character? How does the conflict make you feel as a reader or how do you respond to it or what does it make you ponder?

Here is some more info on Prime Minister Terrence O'Neill. Not sure if it is all accurate on Wiki but worth a look CLICK HERE
