As soon as I got to the chapter heading I took a deep breath and said "OK, this is THE chapter, let's see if you can get through it in one piece this time." I was so shocked and horrified and unsettled the first time that I was shaking for a while. While I managed much better this time I honestly can say I don't know how an author can put such things into writing. When I read something so dramatic it becomes a living thing for me. I do wonder though, if Pamela having been able to somewhat "detach" her physical self from what was happening to her on the train, whether that made it easier for her to deal with the choice she makes in Mermaid. Almost as if to say you can have my body but never my heart, mind & soul for that is truly the essence of a person.
