Chapter 34, 'Not Peter's Brother'

'It was rather well known in certain less-than-elegant circles that many a Republican and wanted man, though not necessarily in this particular order, could be found of a Saturday night tipping his elbow at the Sniffy Liffy.'

One of the funniest chapters in the book!

We are introduced to Lutie O'Toole (not Peter's brother :-) and Father Joseph Jesus Bunrattey, an outrageous looking pair who immediately capture the attention of the clientele of the Sniffy Liffy.
I have to say Jamie surprised me and totally cracked me up in this chapter. I had to keep reminding myself which one, Jamie or Casey, was actually playing Lutie. With the working class accent and the outrageous behavior...I liked him before - I think I became smitten here *g*

The target for the night was one Ben Hanrahan.

Upon leaving the Pub, Lutie and da Fadder wait for Ben to follow, more importantly they wait to see WHO follows or watches Ben.

Turns out to be Jimmy Mack. Casey questions him about the missing guns - Jimmy advises Casey to ask Jamie.

Jimmy tries to strike a deal with Casey, leave him and his drug operation alone and he'll tell Casey who did the job on the train.

Someone else, unseen, joins the party and shoots Jimmy. Casey and Jamie take off at a run but a stray bullet has found Casey's bum.

They make it home to a very angry and worried Pamela. She makes Jamie remove the bullet from Casey's bum and makes them sleep in the same room for the night.

In the fog just before sleep takes them, Jamie admits to not knowing where the guns are but is curious why Casey has never asked him the question. Casey tells him that he is entitled to his secrets and that he trusts him with whatever they are. *sigh*

Chapter 35, 'Lover, Make Me Forget'

'She was home long after dark had fallen and Belfast lay under fog, heavy and impenetrable, with only the odd sulfurous orange light finding it's way through.'

We learn Pamela has been working long, hard days in a meat packing plant. Casey has been on yet another out of town trip.

She arrives home from work to Casey hiding in the shadows of their bedroom. Casey immediately goes on the offensive, questioning her about visiting Jamie.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but this is one of, maybe the only time in the books that I was a little put out with him. Does he really not trust her at all yet? Or is he goading her for what comes next?

Pamela has also been to visit Seamus, she asks him to order Casey to leave the organization.

Through Seamus, Casey has given Pamela a good sum of money. Money he had put aside for the 'fight'. He tells her above all else he wants her to be happy and safe - she is free to leave, get out, at any point she feels she can no longer handle this life.

Pamela learns that Casey is the now the head of the IRA or at least one of the split off factions in Belfast.

In the way they do best, they make each other forget, the world outside.
This time felt very bittersweet to me *sniff*
