Subject: Part Four: When the Dark Night Seems Endless….

I want to start off saying that the beginning of Chapter 47 was beautifully written. I could see, smell and feel all the prose on the page as we see Casey & Pamela’s house become a home again even in his absence. Cindy – I really wished I could have had some of that cider! *g*

Chapter 47 – All Hallowtide

1. Pamela admits to Pat that she’s received another note – this time asking for a meeting. Does this request seem strange so soon after these exchanges begin? Did it change your suspicion about who the notes are from?

2. Jamie & Pamela discuss her visit with Casey. She tells him that Casey’s asked her not to visit again. Pamela is upset when Jamie agrees. How do you feel about her reaction? Do you think you would feel the same?

3. At the end of this chapter the evening ends with the group finding the hideout where someone has been watching Pamela. Pamela, Lawrence and the animals are packing up to leave. Would you have attempted to object at moving as Pamela did? Do you think its Robin who’s been watching, as Pat and Jamie suspect?

Chapter 48 – If I Were a Blackbird

1. Casey takes Shane’s punishment for the “explosives” found in their common area. He is trying to protect Shane from this sort of “coming of age” experience. We have seen this behavior in other characters in other books. What do you think drives Casey (and the other characters) to do this? What do you think this does to those who take the beating? Those who are spared?

2. Casey sings through his lashings and then threatens the Sergeant after it’s all over. Why do you think he does this? Is this smart considering the power the English have in this situation?

3. Casey has a “dream” in which he speaks with Brian. What do you make of the whole experience? Do you think there is any significance to the stones and ground in the beginning of the dream? Do you think this experience will change Casey?

4. Casey joins the general population again and in the darkness gives peace (and finds it) in music. Is there one song that could bring you calmness or peace?
