There is little I care for in Belinda, but this scene reveals an aspect of her that I can identify and sympathize with. In essence, she represents all who are_not_Pamela. No matter the beauty, the intelligence, the wit, no other woman can compete for Jamie's heart. How painful it must be for the outsider, desperately shielding herself with stinging wit and wisdom, who recognizes destiny when she sees it.

Cindy, as always, this passage is beautifully written and poignant. I was particularly moved by the symbolism of fire and words.
