Peers,
The distinction between content and function words is that the first group accepts changes in it if it happens by the time, while the other one is more restricted to them. (pag.76). Moreover, it was suggested to teach the content words as vocabulary and the function words as grammar, but to do it in this way is not plausible, due to the fact that sometimes some word meanings are represented lexically and some “complex messages require grammar in addition to lexicon for their expression” (pag.77). Then, it is advisable to use both kinds of words mixing the lexicon and the grammar. Alongside this statement, there are some differences concerning to the quantity of vocabulary for the four language skills.
For the reading skill is needed the largest number of words, and for writing and listening skills are needed a larger number of words than speaking. However, it is important to be aware that listening and reading are receptive, while writing and speaking are productive. In other words, it is easier to be receptive without accuracy, but it is not possible to be accurate in writing and speaking without knowing deeply parts of speech, spelling, collocations, and etc. What can we do as teachers to improve our teaching skills regarding to those peculiarities?
