I want to say a few words about "instrumental English". In fact it is often called ESP, not instrumental English, and it is a misconception that it basically refers to reading skills. In fact, we could say that ESP is a 'kind' of communicative approach and it can be used in the teaching of any particular skill such as pronunciation, speaking, writing and so forth. So, ESP or "Inglês Instrumental" can also be used for teaching communicative purposes. For some more reference read http://www.antlab.sci.waseda.ac.jp/abstracts/ESParticle.html
