I do not give this kind of exercise to my students very often but I can say that it is a very good way to show them how to prepare a good writing because having a model helps students build a notion of possible ways something can be done. Now, it depends on the teacher to stimulate students to put their own thoughts and creativity to develop their own texts within a set of parameters as far as writing a good text is concerned.
