The author points out the importance of genre for the teaching of spoken language, as "the notion of genre" helps us to "identify different types of speaking situation and their characteristics". In this sense, he mentions some helpful activities such as the "Use of culture notes". As you can see the examples on pages 75 (Fig. 12) and 76 (Fig. 13 - 14), in this activity "students are provided with information about aspects of conversations that vary across cultures." I am sure that not only will students sound much more natural by getting familiar with these aspects (and using them), but also they will increase their chances to be properly understood in a conversation. What do you think? Have you ever tried these approaches while teaching?
