Yes Michelle,

This is also true for me. I haven“t be prepared to teach genre to my students. It is nice to understand a little bit about it in order to work with them. And actually I have started doing it. Last week I worked some articles from Speak Up magazines with my students, it was a great activity and they really enjoyed it. They could notice, for example, how grammatical patterns vary between genres.
