Hi everybody,
What I liked reading in this chapter was to realize the importance of assisting our students, making them active and participating members of the cultures in which the texts play a part, that is, the importance of cultural and social contexts of language use. Students are led to work independently, feel confident. Also, learning genre is a fundamental part of language development since students need help to understand the social functions of genres and the contexts in which they are used. The necessity to undertake a re-analysis of virtually all of English grammar at discourse levels in order to teach rules of grammar that serve students effectively. And also the necessity of considerable rethinking of ways in which English language has traditionally been taught, and substantial rewriting of many ELT coursebooks.
Since things change all the time, the concern about new and updated sources/materials is something we should consider. ( pages 186,187,192)
What do think about it?
Mirian Melo
