Subject: teachers for volunteer music program

The Australian Red Cross (ARC) is currently seeking volunteer music teachers for its Music Education Program at the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre (VIDC).

The Music Education Program was developed in June 2006 in order to increase activity and well-being amongst detainees.

Classes are conducted by musically trained ARC volunteers, of which the Red Cross is currently seeking, and run for two hours on a weekly basis, involving both large and small group activities, as well as individual activities.

Classes are held each Sunday from 1pm to 5pm, where volunteers are scheduled on a roster basis.

Position Information
This is a volunteer position that involves teaching music skills to people detained at the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre. It involves working with one or two other teachers in a small group setting. Classes are not strictly structured and the activities cover musical games, group singing, group percussion and others.
Teaching a particular instrument is not a requirement, and teachers with varied skills are welcome to apply.

Position requirements
Applicants will be interviewed and if will need to complete an Australian Federal Police check if they wish to become a Music Volunteer Teacher.
• Skills in playing and teaching a musical instrument, theory and/or singing.
• Ability to work with groups of people with different levels of musical knowledge.
• Ability to work with people from non-English speaking backgrounds.
• Ability to work in challenging situations and function effectively as a team member.
• Adherence to the Red Cross Volunteer Code of Conduct.
