» She sighs and fidgets, her face darkening. She toys with a strand of hair colored orange, then with one of her large silver hoop earrings.

'I suppose I could tell you. It was a few years ago, anyhow. I used to live in Chicago, and my next door neighbor had a whole bunch of animals. He mistreated them, kicking and hitting and lashing at them with leashes and sticks. He literally starved them, too. I was only eight, but I got sort of - well, I kinda flipped over to a new page when he chained one of his dogs outside - a lab, one of the sweetest dogs you'd ever find. At least she was. He starved her to death, and I always looked in on her, sometimes brought her water - my parents wouldn't have let me bring food. I looked in on her one day, and she was dead. Starved. When I found her I really just - blew up. When we moved to New York, the man two doors down was doing the same thing - only inside, so it was less obvious. I tried saving him, one night - the guy caught me, and said I was trying to steal his dog. He was a bigshot, used to be the head of a big bank, so everyone believed him. No one really cared about the dog. They sent me to juvi hall.'
