Author: Shannon [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Date Posted: 20:09:50 10/03/07 Wed Hi, I'm Shannon, and as a friend of mine's grandmother put it, I'm "As queer as a three-dollar bill." But everyone already knew that. I really don't have much of a coming out story, because everyone already knew or assumed before I even knew for sure. However, I'm also an awesome big sister, a good daughter, a wonderful girlfriend, a brilliant student, a good friend, a self-proclaimed philosopher and a decent human being. I love girls, but I also like music, pizza, movies, funny-t-shirts, cute furry animals, mini-golf, board games, and candy. I like to cuddle my girlfriend, but I also enjoy helping my classmates with their Spanish, holding doors for poor little elderly ladies, and tipping my servers when I go to restaurants. I value honesty, intelligence, loyalty, and integrity. I could go on for days, but I think most of you see my point. I am a lesbian, yes, but I am SO much more than that. You can't judge a person based on their sexuality, or their race or nationality or gender, or any other tiny characteristic that A. They can't do anything about, and B. Has NOTHING to do with who they are as a person. Hating all homosexuals, for no other reason than because they are gay is no different than hating someone just based on gender, age, nationality, or race. If you are a woman, an African American, Asian American, so on and so forth, you too are a minority, right along with those of us in the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered community. And if you are a minority, and feel hatred toward any other minority group, YOU should be ashamed of yourself. Because when it comes down to it, we are all in this together: a constant struggle for our rights and equality in this society dominated and controlled by the straight, white, American, men. We are all human beings and we all deserve our basic civil rights and we all deserve to be respected as human beings. We aren't getting anywhere by fighting each other.
