I am 13 years old. I think I've been gay for about 3 year but I've only KNOWN since I was about 11. When I was 12 I came out to my best friend, who I'll call 'T'. I'd been trying to tell him for about a month but hadn't been able to get the words out even though i knew he would be okay about. In our class, people were always making jokes about gays - the comment 'You're gay' was not necessarily referring to someone being actually gay but as an insult. I was aware of the general feelings of people about gays. I knew 'T' suspected I was gay because of certain comments I made - I ended them with 'Only joking' usually but I could tell he wasn't sure.

One day in a science lesson he said to me curiously 'Are you gay?'. I replied 'Yes'. His first reaction was of disbelief - I had said things like this in the past and then said I was just joking and I think he thought this was just one of those times. He began asking me questions like 'How long have you been gay?' but I was still kind of in shock that i'd told him and i wasn't really prepared to answer his questions just then - I felt awkward.

A bit later in the school yard it became obvious that he wasn't convinced. I said, 'why would i lie? How would it benefit me to have you think I'm gay?' Finally he believed me. HE took it well. He's obviously as good a friend as i thought he was .

Finally I want to say good luck to everyone else in coming out. It can help.
