The Lake Hasn�t Changed

When I was young,
I would sprint in full speed

as if invincible
in control of my chaos.

lean muscle tsunamis the surface
such beautiful emotion,

leaping a little higher
with each stride,

feet fishing for air
trying to stay upright longer

get even farther, deeper
then I did the day before.

Now, I walk slowly
out into the water,

enjoying the feel of granules
as they quicksand

between my toes.
Sometimes, minnow schools

escort me through the shallows.
When the water saturates

the bottom of my swim shorts,
body parts turtle from the chill,

I stand in place a long while,
before finally going under.
