] Date Posted: 22:59:42 01/17/08 Thu "Class Reunion" Class Reunion Sometimes late at night when the air gets heavy, when the moon is full and somewhat hazy, Randy Forthwhile still believes that he can fly. He may have once been right. Hell, he could always do things most people wouldn't dream about trying themselves. He could even juggle! Sure, he wasn't quite as good as the average circus clown but, he could put on quite a show any time you asked him just the same. I remember back in school how he used to do this strange thing with his index finger and the webbing between two fingers on his other hand. He'd wait until Mrs. Quigley would turn to write on the board then he'd bring his hands to his cheek and before you know it we'd all hear SNAP! Loud as a firecracker! That's right he'd snap the webbing of his finger to make a sound you could hear two blocks away. Mrs. Quigley knew it was him all along but she could never catch him in the act because Randy was smart enough not to over do it. He was the California State High Jump Champion four years in a row. I used to love to watch him sail over those bars. He'd look at me and smile Then, with the grace of a gazelle he'd glide in the air, eyes facing the sky, body arched like a gymnast. I can still see him jumping now in slow motion, all these years later. I'd swear sometimes it looked like he was flying. I remember replaying some of those jumps in my mind over and over while wishing I could be him, just once, to know what it felt like to sail through the air. We lost touch over the years until we met again at our thirty year class reunion. Old buddies have a way of finding the time to step away and have a private conversation. There we were, too old high school pals, trying to catch up on the years gone by. I asked Randy if he had ever married. He dropped his eyes to the ground and and replied, "Well to tell you the truth I've been married four times. It seems women love me for a couple of years and then the love just disappears." For the next half hour Randy held the floor. He filled me in on all his accomplishments in business and the awards he received for winning a National over 40 Diving Championship. I wasn't really listening to him much towards the end. I was thinking more about how Randy Forthwhile, my old friend, was always too busy focusing on himself to really care who he was talking to. He had spent more than half a lifetime proving he was better than everyone else around him. Hell, that's what he always beleived and I believed it once myself. The only problem is no one really wants to be around someone very long who truly believes they are somehow better than everyone else. You see his biggest problem, ironically, turns out to be that Randy Forthwhile still believes that he can fly. ajs [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |

Date Posted: 05:29:45 01/20/08 Sun ~ and yet life keeps clipping his wings... poor Randy ![]() I guess all four wives couldn't get past his one true love...himself it would be so cool if those reunions were more about old mates catching up and having a laugh, instead of the stressful and competitive events they seem to be... a wonderful capture of this scenario, honeybunch *warm hugs* Sash xx ![]() .
