Subject: Toilets Please

I'm on the train. I'm coming to Manhattan from Lefferts. Morning coffee hits! What do I do now?

I'm on the train. It's Saturday night. I've met friends for dinner and a show. It was wonderful. But it's cold tonight and I'm standing on the platform waiting for the train and no, I'm not listening to my iPod and dancing. I've got a little bit of a siutation here. Where do I "go"?

Oops! Mommy always said "Go before we get in the car. We're not stopping on the way..." I should have remembered that before I got on the train. Now it's too late! Never mind I'm going to be uncomfortable sitting here in wet jeans but the person next to me might not like the scent and the person who comes to sit in this seat when I leave isn't going to like what happens to thier clothes.

There USED to be public rest rooms in the system. You can still see the tiles above the old doors in some stations. There USED to be people who maintained the rest rooms. That was in the days when unemployment wasn't so high and the U.S. dollar wasn't so low.

Somewhere along the line of time, some idiot decided that we passengers should take to standing between cars (lucky men!) or maybe hiding at the end of the tracks in the relative darkness of the tunnels rather than going to a place specific to the purpose of being a human being.

I can't help but wonder sometimes, what the MTA actually expects us to do in situations where it just happens to be an emergency. It's not like we're going to pay two dollars just to go in and clog the plumbing. And OK. If they have to put in some sort of security camera (not in the stall please - OK. you can put one over the urinal if that's what you need to see, I'm not that shy). But maybe hiring somebody who actually WANTS to work to maintain the lavatories, somebody who might have a little emergency situation themselves and need to use the facilities and will appreciate the fact that they're back. Hey! It couldn't hurt the economy and it might help in a miriad of other ways.

Do I make my point clear? Or should I take it between the cars? (No madame, it's not raining in the tunnel. That splashing on the window beside your face? Well...)
