] Date Posted: 06:11:58 02/02/08 Sat ~In the din of voices that comes as waves Ebbing and flowing, crashing and leaving The voice of reason steps up to the podium Whispering the words we desperately needed~ Her eyes, though sunken and aged Twinkles with life; perhaps a far away life Of times and memories more apathetic Than the current ones would permit Her hair, once an ebony sheen, now as frail And fragile as the owner who lay there All lifeless and spent in a haphazard way Where white now reflects the sunshine That streams through frosted windows On a winter’s day, holding our hearts Like a comfort blanket we desperately need Her hands once nimble and quick and, Always ready to smooth back our hair or, Brush our faces tenderly with the love That shone in her eyes, now lay Upon her lap, twisted with age and yet… Still so full of the love she always had Her body no longer sleek and graceful Lay there, in the quiet refuge of age That allows her to rest more comfortably Than she did in her youth, when she Paced the floors waiting for one of us To come in from a night out Stilling her heart with the comfort of Knowing we were at last safe and sound Her faith, the strongest attribute nestled us Under her roof, and yet, she never Complained of loss of sleep, or the worry Lines that etched her face Her faith still evident today, as it was In her youth, her marriage, her life She just loved us unconditionally. Her mind still sharp as a tac, flits about From one memory or another, almost Certain that every threaded memory Is laced in her quiet knowing about life And what matters the most in this world The love that shines still from her eyes Sparkles to life as each of us sit with her In her hour of need, and we reminisce, We laugh, and we tell stories From times that are faded off in the distance Like some setting sun far from our reach Yet, her visible pleasure forms on lips That once was perfectly formed, now Curl up in a toothless smile, which brings Such tenderness to each of our hearts Her wisdom bequeathed to her descendants In the form of memories cherished that she So lovingly shared with us of her childhood, Her womanhood and her life experiences Not a moment is ever squandered when we Gather around her bed to listen to her speak Her life marked the beginning of life for us As each generation gathers regularly around The woman that we call “Ma, Nanny or Tota” So affectionately for more than a half a century As she often gathered us in her arms to comfort, Encourage, or guide in the days of her youth We now gather our arms around her to comfort Encourage and guide her in her final days of life Her skin once pure, soft and supple, offering Her husband agility, love and respect now Leathery, loose and aged, marked by spots That tells of a life, of perhaps not so long ago Yet, her love has never wavered Her love has never misguided her And her love has never failed to touch Each of us, at any given stage of life And it is this love, this life that we cherish Those we so ache to preserve, yet… We know that her days are numbered But her immeasurable love will always Continue on as her legacy to all of us… For eternity… We love you! ©TKS 2008 [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |

Date Posted: 06:50:58 02/02/08 Sat For those of you that don't know Tammy well let me just say that she is a dear friend with a very special heart. This poem is about her Grandmother. Tammy, Sorry for the preface. That's twice now in twenty minutes that you have touched me deeply. First your blog reply in the basement where you gave me a Mohawk name, now here. I am so very glad you posted this. I will be back later to award it and to let you know how loud your words have spoken to me here this morning. My thoughts and prayers are with you through this most difficult time. What a beautiful tribute you have penned for the woman who invested in you so many years ago. I for one am very thankful for her as well. Much love, andy [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
