Cityscapes Violent Street Bloody Neighborhood

With a heartfelt diffidence....
A hesitant pause,
She stepped off the bus.

lean lighting
solitary street lamp
scant comfort

Her world......
A violent street,
Cutting across a bloody neighborhood.

Trumped up want to be gangsters,
Hanging like flies over a decaying carcass,
Cling to any barren sliver of territory they can claim;
Calling it, their turf.

hip hop mobsters
jackets of color
macho postures
Bolstered by concealed cannons of courage;
Savagely utilized arsenals of death's justice.
The nightly nemesis,
attack or
revenge.

She had no real choice.
single mom
two kids
minimum wage
Everything in life led to this stark conclusion.
A violent street,
Cutting across a bloody neighborhood.
Here,
Life was cheaper than the rent.

The childrens father,
Now dead almost two years,
Had tried to make his break.
desperate night
blood soaked clothing
bullet pierced chest
unsolved crime

The oath of the street is king.
gang allegiance
easy money
fast living
hungry for victims

She took a cautious breath,
Brushed off her well worn coat
And began her nightly walk home;
Hopeful her two sons were alright.
another day
another life
another moment

On a violent street,
Cutting across a bloody neighborhood.
