American decision makers believed that it was a good idea to use American funds to help rebuild the European countries because it would gain allies, help international trade, and rebuild the European economy. The European Recovery Program, also known as the ERP, had to major goals that it wanted to accomplish. The total amount spent on aiding the European countries was 13.3 billion dollars. Even though a great deal of money was spent and also brought the United States into a greater depression, it helped keep a stable government in the European countries and helped lead to the formation of organizations such as NATO.
