One of Eisenhower’s most successful ventures in foreign policy had to deal with the Suez Canal Crisis in October through November of 1956. The situation began when the Egyptian government nationalized the canal, due to the western nations withdrawing funds for the Aswan Dam. In response to the seizure of the Suez Canal, the British, French and Israelis launched a joint offensive and seized the canal. Eisenhower was quite angry at this and as a result placed an embargo on the invading countries; This, along with a resolution from the U.N. calling for the withdrawal of the occupying troops, forced Britain, France, and Israel to retreat. I believe this gave off the right image of the United States to the rest of the world that we do not apply different sets of rules to different countries, that we support the rights of sovereignty and self-determination of other nations.
