I lived in canarsie for 35 years.20 years too long.I always thought growing up in canarsie was great. It was safe, clean and white. As a teenage I saw canarsie as a safe haven from the outside world , no crime no violence and no black people. I learned early canarsie was a racist neighborhood and thought nothing of it. But one day I was hanging out in bildersee school yard when a young black male riding on his ten speed bike on flatlands avenue was pushed off his bike and beaten up very badly. The older kids screamed "nigger go home" took his bike and foisted it ontop of the handball court fence. I will never forget that incident.This story is not uncommen in canarsie in the 1970's. I had many jewish and italian friends all of them racists ,thou none of them would take action on their feelings they had no problem expressing them verbaly. I read these message boards and wonder if anyone else remembers canarsie this way.
