Boy-man 12-38, Western Eur. cystoscopies for urinary infections

I had cystoscopy. I am male. The exams took place in Western Europe in my home city, at 12 years old and at 30 - 38 years old, in the period 1990-1999, and the Year 2011. Cystoscopy occured in a hospital.

PREPARATION AND ANESTHESIA

Got an accurate explanation of what should be done and the reason. Got to a special preparation room. Had to undress completely and go to bed. Got a hospital gown before going to bed. Fell totally in sleep after the medication.

Taken vitals like temperature, heart rate and blood pressure. A doctor came, asked questions and explained.

God lubricating and pain-killing fluid inserted in through the pee-hole. Got a shot to calm down and make sleepy.

At 12: shot + general anaesthetic, Got gas through a mask and put fully to sleep. As adult: just lubricant.

Had a gown around me, but the lower body was naked. Lay on back with legs in stirrups.

WHAT I KNOW ABOUT THE EXAM PROCEDURE

They put a flexible snake-like cystoscope in through the urethra. They pumped up and irrigated bladder with water when looking inside.

As adult: squirted water and urine over nurse on withdrawal of cystoscope. No special arrangements.

DIAGNOSIS AND FOLLOW-UP

Diagnosis - urinary infection. At 12: partially closed foreskin leading to infection. Adult: nothing needed.

Got mediaction for infection. Had corrective surgery at 12. The reason was urinary infection.

JUDGEMENT

It was useful. It was painful at 12, as adult NOT painful at all.

COMMENT

It is common practice that boys, and sometimes girls, that have urinary tract infection has systoscopy thereafter to look for abnormalities.

One often use general anesthesia, especially in children for simple exams like this. But as this case shows, general anesthesia do not hinder pain, but the pain tends to occur afterwards. But it also shows that cystoscopy can be done painfree without general anesthesia when handled correctly.

The extensive use of general anesthesia has the aim of hindering knowledge for the patient of what is done, not to hinder pain.

Possibly the corrective surgery was done during the cystoscopy, which give a valid reason for using general anesthesia though.
