Girl 11yo, Vermont, boys and girls being naked together in montessori school.

This happened in 1990, Vermont. I was an 11-year-old girl at the time, but the entire class was involved, a dozen boys and girls all around the same age.

I was attending a montessori school. One day during a unit on culture around the world, we were told how students in Scandinavia and Germany and Japan and places like that were comfortable taking their clothes off in front of each other and having a bath or sauna together.

The teacher showed us a tape with video of kids from those countries in those scenarios, and then afterward asked for a show of hands, how many of us would be interested in trying that out ourselves. I didn't raise my hand as I was very shy about my body, but the majority of the class raised theirs. The teacher said it wouldn't be authentic or very comfortable if we didn't all socialize together equally, so he said we should all undress and look at each other. I was reluctant, but the teacher gently pulled down my skirt and I did the rest myself, seeing this is just what the class was going to do.

When we were all naked, he told us to look at each other for a while, and then we walked (still naked) to the school swimming pool because that's the closest we had to hot springs or a public bath. We actually had a pretty good time, even if I was kind of embarrassed. I understand why people in other countries enjoy that kind of thing, but I don't think they have it sprung on them one day unannounced in school, they grow up with it.

COMMENTS

To let kids do things together naked can be good to learn about bodily differences and to get a good relationhip to own body. But it should not be forced upon them when their culture has an attitude against nakedness together with other people.
