Subject: Building a Long Wire Antenna for SWL

Been a SWL for about 20 years. Only now do I have a chance to do a real setup for my shortwave desk.

A question: Can a wire antenna ever be too long? Is a 40 meter long antenna too long for shortwave? The kits I see that are available are at their longest 66 feet (20 meters).

If I had my way I would span the whole length of the property. About 70 meters. I have a mfj antenna tuner. Should I get a balun if I already have a tuner and a preselector? There is a possibility that I would explore the Longwave Bands, would a balun limit that ability?

Am upgrading to a better shortwave radio too. Yaesu FR and FRG series radios look promising. Can't seem to find an Allied sx-190, or a Kenwood R-599 that are both decent shape and decent price.

I know this isn't SWL World but I thought I give it a shot.
