Date Posted: 08:30:32 12/08/08 Mon Hi Doug, Thank you for inviting me to join the Lehman College Mentorship Support Group. I am a bit late but not too late --- reason is because I have been preoccupied and engaged in some other business. Anyway, I am on board and I would lke to congratulate you, (new grads), fellow alumni on your achievement. I am also delighted to join you and to give you my support as you as you continue to make strides. I must tell you that you guys are very lucky for many reasons. (1) You happen to take the nursing course at the right time. In this nightmare economic times I am pretty sure that it is much more difficult to get a student loan now than it was 4 years ago. (2)You were able to find a job right after graduation. Not everyone is so lucky. I know for a fact that some hospitals do not hire new graduates. In some cases, they are being told to reapply after they have gained one year experience in med-surg. You guys are blessed! You have crossed the biggest huddles. (a) You have completed the nursing program (b)you have passed the boards (c) You have found a job ------Now you can apply what you've learned in theory to real situations (disease manifestation vs treatment). Some of you are very nervous and this is quite understood. It is normal to be nervous but theoretically you are equipped to take on the task. I want you to know that the experience RNs are the very same nurses who started just like you. I have read your comments. All of you are optimistic about going forward and that's a good sign. Remember, "practice makes perfect". In due time you will acquire the knowledge and skills that you need to carry out your duties independently and effectively. So good luck on your endeavors. You all will do well! Ps. Eric, I know that you are concerned about your English but in order for one to get where you are now one would have to be able to speak, understand and write English. Wish I could speak Korean the way you write English. Since I do not speak Korean sometimes it is difficult for me to communicate with my Korean patients. But don't worry, your korean language will come very handy. At SV hosp. the patients are multicultural. Soon, you will realize that your native language is much more of an asset than a liability. Language Bank would like to have you for interpretation so put your mind to rest and keep on writing until you become the best. Melanie, you are getting better everyday. I see that you are able to leave early these days. You seem to be gaining confidence. GOOD JOB!!!! Shabenna, take one day at a time. Remember that Rome was not built in one day. Soon you will be able to lead the way. Take your cues from Melanie, she has written some good tips. Once again, good luck to all. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
