When rock and roll music exploded onto the music scene starting particularly in the mid-50’s, there was a crying need for a performer who’d give us a kick-bleep sound that combined a twangy bass guitar. It was often with a backup band with a sax that also cooked.

Thank you, Duane Eddy.

You delivered.

He passed away Wednesday…and he had turned 86 just last Friday.

Duane Eddy thus helped usher in rock and roll music by having the second most top 40 instrumental hits with 14 (from 1958-62). Only Herb Alpert had more with 17. Among his hits “Dixie” and even “Shazam!”

I personally had the pleasure of meeting and chatting briefly with Duane Eddy around November of 1970. I was on tour…trumpet in hand…with the 600th Air Force Band, Republic of the Philippines…when we did a month-long tour of that part of the world that included Bangkok, Thailand. I recall meeting him after the performance and asking him his age. “32”

Here’s Duane Eddy’s breakthrough hit from ’58…and check out that guitar work that I’ll guess that the Beatles heard…

Here’s a live rendition of his first Top tenner…from the summer of 1958…

Here’s his biggest hit, a #4 song from 1960 that barely lasted 1:40…

“Because They’re Young” reached #1 on the WHK/Cleveland Fabulous 50 Tunedex in June 1960. The song came from a movie of the same movie that also co-starred Dick Clark…even though Duane Eddy didn’t perform the title song in the movie. And even though he wasn’t backed with his backup band, the Rebels…but violins instead…it worked.

Duane instead did “Shazam!” while James Darren sang “Because They’re Young” vocally…(yeah! The "T.J. Hooker” show guy)…

Duane Eddy also gave us the shortest top 40 single in history…His 1959 hit that clocked in at 1:17…
