Subject: Call for the release of Prof. Bandazchevsky

Letter for the attention of Alyaksandr LUKASHENKA, President of the Republic of Belarus
Thursday, 30th January 2003

Re: call for the release of Yuri Bandazhevsky

Dear President,

I am writing to make an appeal to your sense of justice and magnanimity in the case of Professor Yuri Bandazhevsky, currently serving an eight-year sentence for allegedly accepting bribes from students.

Even if there were any foundation to the allegations against Prof. Bandazhevsky, I cannot understand how the Republic of Belarus can gain anything in inflicting this kind of punishment on a sick man. For a scientist found guilty of corruption, the ensuing loss of credibility and disgrace would be a sufficient condemnation in itself. Surely, the reputation of Belaus in the international community would be greatly improved if you released Prof. Bandazhvsky, especially since he has suffered enough already and is unlikely to represent any threat to security or become involved in future criminal activities. On the contrary, his release would signal to the world that Belarus is ready to show mercy in this sad case before it is too late.

Before his incarceration, this prisoner believed strongly in science and worked sincerely for the benefit of his own country as well as the wider community. By freeing Prof. Bandazhevsky now, you would demonstrate that the rule of law is respected by your country and that creative scientific investigation is to be encouraged as serving the interests of the civil society.

Yours sincerely.
