It is quite disgusting that smoke detectors caontain americium, highly toxic as you describe. Why manufacturers still make them this way is sheer insanity. Human exposure to radioactive materials is presently out of control.Smoke detector makers claim the exposure is small, but that is also what nuclear power plant operators say and that is what atomic bomb handlers say and atomic bomb waste storage faiclity operaotrs say, etc. without ever thinking clalry and adding up exposure from all sources in adidtion to natural radiation! STOP manufacturing plutoniun and americium. Humanity has survived for millennia without smoke detectors. Once I had a house fire starting an dthe dector didn't go off anyway. I woke up and called the fire dept. The point is--keep your house safe from fire in the first place.
